TeachersFifty Chicago Public Schools physical education teachers participated in an "Olympic Week in America" professional development workshop on April 11

Olympic Week in America

Chicago 2016 is committed to introducing students to the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Olympic Movement. In support of this effort Chicago 2016 is recruiting elementary schools to participate in Chicago’s inaugural celebration of “Olympic Week in America” on May 5–9, 2008.

Olympic Week in America is a school-based educational-enrichment program that will excite and educate students about the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Through a focus on the Olympic Games, students will be reinforcing their skills in language arts, social studies, math, science and physical education. By downloading the materials below, your school will have the resources to develop a weeklong unit on Olympism that includes Olympic and Paralympic lesson plans and a school field day with opening and closing ceremonies.

Lesson Plans

The United States Olympic Committee has developed a detailed program for Olympic Week in America. The program guide includes a resource guide to the Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as lesson plans geared to K–2nd, 3rd–5th, and middle school grades. The lesson plans for K–2nd and 3rd–5th can be adapted to language arts, social studies, math, science and physical education classes. Each middle-grade lesson plan is specific to language arts, social studies, math, science or physical education. You can download them here.

You can samples these materials by downloading the 2008 Program Guide below. If you'd like to download the rest, we ask that you provide your name and e-mail address below.
